Il giusto app

The fitness web app connects three different profiles: athletes, coaches, and administrators, in order to provide a personalized fitness plan including workouts and diet tailored to each athlete. The program is based on machine learning but is overseen by coaches to ensure greater control over the program and, consequently, the user's health.

Problem statement

A small gym in Turin is expanding its customer base by introducing the option to provide online and remote support. The training and diet plans are highly specific, based on the data provided daily by the athlete regarding both nutrition and training. Currently, this data is entered into an Excel spreadsheet, making it difficult to identify certain information or automate certain functions.

What

Il Giusto wants to be a platform where athletes can create a daily routine for their fitness program and manage all their information in one place, personalized and easy to use, so as not to lose any information due to the inconvenience of having to write it down (perhaps on a piece of paper that will be lost who knows where).

Who

The web app speaks exclusively at men aged between approximately 25 and 50 years old. These individuals are those who already know the program and diligently follow it every day without ever skipping a beat; they are also people who are starting the program for the first time and are not very athletic, so in addition to needing support in performing physical exercises, they will also need the motivation to continue their journey to make it almost automatic.

How

The ability to manage one's dietary plan, setting up a diet based on data that changes depending on the activity performed and reported body measurements. Collection of daily, weekly, and monthly body measurements for an accurate analysis of the athlete's progress and for intervention by the coach if the measurements are not satisfactory.

Why

The path designed by the coach is based on a series of studies accumulated throughout his career. This has led him to develop a highly specific health program and to want to share it with as many people as possible, not just in Turin. To achieve this, it is necessary to guide individuals step by step, take very specific actions, and it proves difficult to do this online with a Google form.

Competitors and Analysis

My team and I searched for different competitors that provides video tutorials or assistance for broken devices in Europe. In summary, Ifixit stands out due to its vast DIY resources and community support, while iDoc+ and Fixo focus on convenient at-home services. TechXS caters specifically to the Australian market with same-day repairs.

User personas

My team and I though about three user personas based on their ability to manage technology: the noob, the medium user and the professional.
avatar
Eracle
45 years old, divorced, a professor at the state high school of Vobarno. The divorce has been tough on him, now it's time to get back on track and start a new life.
  • He doesn't feel good about himself, he can't imagine improving his physical appearance.
  • In need of constant motivation.
  • Needs tutorials due to lack of knowledge about physical activity.
  • Recipe book to learn how to cook meals that make him feel full but healthy.

Cesare
38 years old, a bright, capable young man in the prime of his life. Physical appearance matters as much as his inner well-being, and his entire life revolves around this.
  • He already knows how to engage in physical activity.
  • He needs to track his progress and nutritional values.
  • He has a well-organized life and wants to keep it that way.
  • He needs to know in advance what he will eat during the week to make a quick and efficient grocery list.

Information architecture

The athlete's user flow follows a daily routine: I check what workout I have to do to organize my day, plan my meals, update daily measurements. The coach's flow prioritizes the program the athletes are following.

Key functionalities

Training program

The workout is structured with a guide that allows those already familiar with the training to follow the timer and to perform the number of repetitions by quickly reading the information on the card that automatically appears. For those who are not yet familiar with the types of exercises, each card provides a link to a video tutorial that explains how to perform the exercise well. The choice not to include an automatic visible tutorial is due to the fact that the majority of the user base is experienced.

Diet program

Every day, the athlete can choose to eat one of the recipes recommended by the coach. If none of these suits them, they can freely compose their meal, save it, and set it as a specific dish for certain days of the week, for example, on training days. The editor works with data provided by the algorithm to maintain the correct balance.

Dashboard

Each coach has access to a dashboard, primarily used on desktop, where they can see all information regarding their athletes. From this panel, they have limited freedom to make changes to the athletes’ dietary plans and workout programs, contact them directly for important communications and see their measurements and statistics.

Visual system

The design is aimed at attracting men aged 25 to 65 who want to improve their body image and feel comfortable with themselves, their partners, and friends. To effectively communicate with this demanding and sometimes delicate audience, a dark theme was chosen, along with a tough and dynamic font.

Learnings

The project started in May with a very short delivery deadline. Initially, the workload and complexity, not only of UX and UI design but also of code development, were underestimated. Several front-end developers, including international ones, took place in order to try to deliver, but with no success. We were supposed to start a first testing phase in September, collecting the initial feedback from a sample of 100 users and making improvements throughout the year. As of today, after the 6th developer, they still haven't managed to put the project online, and there are still no precise deadlines for the completion of the first version.
